So, how can we build a growth mindset in our students?
- Encourage and model goal setting, reflection, and self-assessment.
- Encourage students to think growth thoughts and avoid negativity. Start a Power of Yet Campaign. "I can't do this ... yet!" "I can't divide fractions ... yet!" With hard-work and effort, progress can be made in anything.
- Be wary of your praise. Reward effort, not just ability. Try to avoid blanket praise statements, such as "You are so smart." Instead say "You really put forth a lot of effort on this question."
- Set high expectations and scaffold students towards mastery.
- Make your classroom a safe place for students to learn and grow from failure. Do not allow them to blame others or make excuses!
- HAVE A GROWTH MINDSET YOURSELF! Refrain from thinking fixed mindset thoughts that limit you or hold you back. Let your students see that you’re constantly improving instead of being stuck in a rut.
